The Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness is...."different things to different people", as the song goes. It then goes on to list various sources of, and reasons for, happiness, but that's not what I'm talking about here. What I'm interested in is, what do we actually mean by the term "happiness"? And once again, I suspect that we all have a different understanding of it - if we have any idea at all!
For example, have you ever been excited by the prospect of an event only to be disappointed by the reality? You thought it was going to make you happy and it didn't. But you were happy whilst you were anticipating, weren't you? Or was that something else too?
So, if we don't know what we mean by "happiness", how can we look for it or know when we've found it? There is no definitive answer, we all have to make up our own minds, but it's probably best to do that before we go out looking for something.
