I'm sure many of us have made a commitment to be healthier and fitter in the coming year. Possibly losing a few pounds, stopping drinking, giving up smoking, getting a little more exercise, eating more fruit and veg, blobbing in front of the TV less, reading and learning more.....
Some of you may have taken on board one of those ideas like Veganuary, or decided to follow a particular exercise regime or diet plan, and if that works for you, that's brilliant. And they're all definitely worth a try if the ideas appeal and gel with your lifestyle. As long as you don't beat yourself up for being a total failure if and when, in the end, it turns out that it isn't right for you - because that's counter-productive, isn't it?
We all have different interpretations of "healthy", and the only way we can find out what suits us is to try something, which inherently implies failure and mistakes at least some of the time. Then, in the media, we see glorious, shining examples of "success", telling us that they have the answer and it seems so much easier and more straightforward to follow their advice than to face the possibility of going through that disappointment again, letting ourselves down. Here it is, presented as a simple programme, guaranteed to work. Even when our reasoning, logic and common sense tell us it's just another money-making scam, we want to believe it so badly, we shut out those doubts. So when we don't achieve what we're supposed to, it must mean that we're the reason, right?
Do your research, trust yourself and your instincts, don't be sucked in by pseudo-science (which is often used by those who should know better!) and do what suits you. I can almost guarantee it will be tough, but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing.
