I've written before about change and how it often feels incredibly scary, but that it is inevitable. I have also written about our propensity as humans to avoid the realities of life, preferring instead to seek out quick and easy, ready-made, over-simplified solutions.
Fear of not knowing is a common element here - we want "proper" answers, neatly packaged, predictable endings. Not going to happen! And that Benjamin Franklin quote about death and taxes being the only two certainties in life is inaccurate - change should also be in there.
Once we realise and can accept that, everything becomes a whole lot easier and we are less likely to become anxious and agitated. Ironically, by avoiding those situations which cause us most stress, we turn them into monsters, unnecessary triggers for panic, give them far more significance than they deserve.
Behaviours of this kind are undoubtedly a result of something very damaging, but with the right help, they do not have to be an inevitable part of life (unlike change!). It genuinely is a pointless exercise to try and make the world fit with your view of how it should be; it is a lot of hard, tiring work and it creates pressure and conflict. Swim with the tide, accept, adapt and you can preserve your energy for the stuff that matters.
